Plasma HDTV Burn-in, much ado about nothing

Worried about burn-in on your plasma HDTV? Dennis from Electronichouse.com says new plasma display owners should rest easy. All the major plasma HDTV manufacturers of plasma displays have build-in fail-safes to guard against burn-in and good news - they work!

Plasma Burn-inBurn-in as it’s commonly called (image retention if you’re a well heeled electronics techie) is a common complaint of plasma type HDTVs. I’ve heard the baritone voices of grown men speaking fondly of their pricey investment crack like school boys when the topic of burn-in comes up.

Image retention is said to occur in plasma sets when they’re left on for hours on end with a single static image. This can occur with a video game’s HUD or a news ticker. Once burn-in strikes, a shadowy outline of the static image is forever frozen into your display, always present in the background as a reminder of your oversight.

We’ve always known the chances of burn-in are reduced by simply having images move around screen. But networks that leave a logo in the lower corner of the screen are a particular nuisance to plasma owners.

But, according to the latest information on the odds of any newer plasma suffering image retention - it’s all much ado about nothing:

"Panasonic, LG, Samsung, Pioneer, and Hitachi - have all taken several steps to greatly reduce or eliminate completely any signs of image retention." Barker says in the article.

A 2005 torture test was conducted by the Image Science Foundation of modern plasma where they forced them to display a static image for a period of 48-hours. Surprisingly any evidence of image retention disappeared after the plasma sets displayed continuous loop of normal video for 24 hours.

The conclusion of the study:

"The commonly held beliefs about the viability and performance quality of plasma TVs turn out to be merely myths when held up to the discerning eye of quantifiable testing."
