Onkyo says adios HD DVD
Onkyo Corp. announced today that it'll halt production of its premium HD DVD players. After Toshiba had already announced that HD DVD is effectively dead, it should come as no surprise to hear about manufacturers that were planning to build them cease production.
Onkyo wasn't exactly a powerhouse in the HD DVD, it only sold about 2,000 of its players. The company says it will continue to offer full support for the players it has already sold.
But the Japanese manufacturer was just going to get rolling with the production of HD DVD players using parts from Toshiba. Since Toshiba has exited the HD DVD business, reliable sources for the needed internal parts will be difficult.
It was easy for Onkyo to opt out of the HD DVD business because it never committed to be an HD DVD exclusive. Onkyo had been working on Blu-ray players at the same time and will continue. After April 2008, Blu-ray will be the only HD disc players available from Onkyo.

Don't worry, monthly PSN fees are in the works when Mr. Kutaragi's master plan kicks and PS3 really takes off in three or four years from now when the world realizes how superior it really is... then our user base will be close enough to Xbox Live that we'll begin billing you a monthly.
Dammit people, we're Sony, not the United Way!
