HD DVD needs better PR after Nextflix, Best Buy beating

Bagdad BobBagdad BobThe HD DVD Promotions Group sent out a whiney statements yesterday after the beating it took from Netflix and Best Buy. HD DVD sure doesn’t know how to play the defiant underdog with a hopeless cause. C’mon HD DVD, show us what you’ve got! You’re at war and you need to throw the public some spin.

Yesterday HD DVD got sacked from online movie rental service Netflix then slapped while it was down by the largest consumer electronics retailer, Best Buy.

Netflix is the world’s largest online movie disc rental service. Shouldn’t Netflix customers be angry the company is deciding which disc format you should use?

Then in the same day, Best Buy, the consumer electronics megastore, decided to officially endorse Blu-ray.

What, does Best Buy think it’s Ted Kennedy now?

You can’t take Best Buy’s endorsement seriously because the retail chain plans to continue stocking HD DVD products. Its endorsement can only amount to recommendations from its sales staff.

If I took electronics recommendations from a guy in khakis and a blue pullover I’d go home with a useless extended warranty and $150 HDMI cables! I hope readers know better than to take advice from the sales staff of a big box store.

In the face of such a bad day, the HD DVD Promotions Group busted out with this statement:

"We have long held the belief that HD DVD is the best format for consumers based on quality and value, and with more than 1 million HD DVD players on the market, it’s unfortunate to see Netflix make the decision to only stock Blu-ray titles going forward. While the Best Buy announcement says they will recommend Blu-ray, at least they will continue to carry HD DVD and offer consumers a choice at retail."

C’mon HD DVD - let’s see some mud-slinging, some spin, let’s get back into this game! The format needs serious help in the PR department. What’s Bagdad Bob up to these days? Maybe it’s time for the HD DVD Promotions Group to offer him a job.
