BD-UP5000 the ultimate HD DVD / Blu-ray combo player unboxed
BD-UP5000It may be the most controversial player since Lenny Bruce went to trial for naughty words. Samsung’s HD DVD/Blu-ray comb player is the one that was supposed do it all.
This was the player that was supposed to do everything any high-def home theater enthusiast could want including: DTS-HD, Dolby Digital True HD, internal decoding, PCM or bitstream through HDMI 1.3, HQV processing of standard definition DVD to almost HD and make a hot cup of coffee.
Early reports have the coffee lukewarm at best and a few other bugs I’ll explore. But for now I just received my test unit so I got to unbox and unwrap the device while exalting the aromas fresh electronics.
I’ll get to test it thoroughly over the next few days and see if the latest firmware update fixes some of the bugs this unit has become infamous for.
The biggest shortcoming so far is the inability to playback the new audio codecs. It’s not compatible with DTS HD and can only do Dolby Digital True HD in two channel mode.
I’ll come up with a little more detail in an update in a few days and I’ll see if I can get someone from Samsung to clarify when and if these patches will come out to make this disc player truly sing. Until then, enjoy the pretty picture from this out-of-box experience.
