Sidekick Slide, Motorola Bounces Back At Sharp
Moto Sidekick SlideWeeks after it was pulled from T-Mobile’s product line and just in time for Christmas - Moto’s Sidekick Slide is back!
The Sidekick Slide was originally pulled for a defective battery contact. The phone sometimes shut itself off when the user slid it open to expose the keypad.
Adding insult to injury, T-Mobile offered disappointed Motorola customers Sharp’s version of the new Sidekick. A real kick in the pants to Motorola because the company needed a successful Sidekick launch to stay competitive.
Losing its Edge
Moto’s space in the cell phone market has slipped along with sales of its once-mighty Razr line of flip-style cell-phones. Moto hoped the new Sidekick would stir up sales for the Christmas season, but has suffered humiliation at the hands of its defect.
T-Mobile licensed two manufacturers to make versions of what would become the third iteration of the Sidekick franchise of powerful gaming/texting cell-phones aimed at 18-25 year olds obsessed with staying digitally connected. Sharp and Motorola would go head to head. But despite Motorola’s stumble, it has plenty of time to save face.
Sharp’s version of the Sidekick is a flip-style phone that opens on hinges to expose its LCD screen and full QWERTY keyboard. The Moto slide version is definitely the one with most cool potential to entice its target market.
It may sound like the synopsis for a B martial arts movie, but …
"The showdown resumes, it’s the Moto Slide-Kick vs the Sharp Flip-Kick!"
