Rogers iPhone 3G Plans Leave Canadians Green for AT&T

Canadians are denied an unlimited wireless data plan! Not for your phone, not for my phone, and definitely not for iPhone. Canadians simply don’t get unlimited wireless data plans, Wayde-I-am. You can use 3G data rates if you must. You can use your 3G data rates on a bus.

But you’ll have to choose one Rogers plan, Wayde-I-am. But beware, use too many of iPhones amenities, you’ll soon pay Rogers outrageous penalties. And those are as popular as Green Eggs and Ham.

Rogers unveiled iPhone 3G price plans and has decided Canadians are laden with excess wealth. Be warned before you take a look at the chart – try not to let the 1995 Krug bubbly issue uncontrollably from your nostrils as it may leave an unsightly stain upon your New & Lingwoods.

Between forthcoming competition in Canadian wireless airwaves and Apple’s insistence, many were fooled into thinking Rogers would provide customers an unlimited data plan. It turns out to have been Apple that cracked in those long, closed-door meetings between Canada’s only GSM wireless carrier and builders of the GSM Smartphone-of-ages.

Rogers budget plan is a $60 monthly fee that gives you 150 minutes and a scant 400MB of data. That’s higher than the fee paid by Americans to AT&T for unlimited data for the iPhone Classic. Your Canadian iPhone subsidy requires a 3-year contract where our south-of-the-border brethren get off with a 2-year beating.

The high-end plan runs for $115 per-month. That gives you 800 minutes and 2 GB of data. The $115 of course doesn’t include tax and System Access Fees and other bonus charges Rogers is so deft at hiding.

So, should you, would you on a boat? Should you, would you with a goat? You will not like Green Eggs and iPhone’s data plan.

  1. No iPhone for me....now says:
I think Canadians had false hope that these plans would be realistic. I mean, look at where this is coming from...a country that allows a company to charge a System Access Fee for the privilege of using their services.

Funny, I thought shelling out a chunk of coin each month to them each month should be enough to gain me access.....oh well. Just grab your iPod Touch and sign up for BOINGO. 26 $/month for access to a ton of HotSpots...

400 Mb. That's about 10 Youtube videos. For 100 dollars.
  3. insecret says:
I don't think this is that bad, in terms of data. The $60/month plan plus the (pretty much) necessary $20 "value pack" upgrade is in the ballpark i was prepared for.

All reports are showing the average user of an iphone uses 100mb a month. Mac blogs have users telling us Canadians they use 200mb-350mb on average. Of course, there are exceptions, but mostly these are people that live on YouTube.

The kick in the ass I wasn't expecting is the lousy voice plans that come with it. Firstly, I'll have to forgo my unlimited incoming calling (these days, this is doable, just unfair). Secondly, of their plans, the $75 has a voice plan more geared towards me, but I wouldn't want to pay for the extra 300mb, 'cause I won't use it.

The other kick in the ass, though we all knew it would come, is the 3yr contract. I can live with signing my life away to Rogers for 3yrs. Whatever. I just hate signing my life away to a plan that will almost definitely improve for late adopters a year from now---especially pissed if Rogers follows suit with AT&T and refuses to let you incorporate the next generation iphone (next year for sure, right?) to an existing contract.

    *sigh*
  4. Gizmo n00b says:
Jokes!!! You would have to be a retard to sign up for that. Why the 3 year contract on top of the ridiculous rates? Take away the contract and maybe...... Nah I still wouldn't do it.

I will stick with my unlocked phone on pay as you go... About $30.00 a month all inclusive with unlimited calls after 6:00 and weekends. Now that's a plan worth keeping!!!
  5. Rory says:
I have to totally agree with insecret.. The data isn't great, but we knew that was coming. Honestly 400MB will be enough despite the fact it would have been nice to see Rogers get with the times. But on that plan 150 DT mins!?!? thats rediculous!! its forcing me to get a higher plan just so I can have the minutes I already get!! I live in MB and we usually have awesome voice plans.

Mine is $10 a month (plus SA Fees) and I get 250 DT mins unlimited evening and weekends starting at 6.

I was thinking of just adding the $30 300 MB Data plan but then I would lose the Visual Voicemail which is one of my favorite features.

It seems like Rogers is playing on the fact that people have no choice rather then making it affordable for everyone, which is what apple intended.
  6. Rogers Sucks says:
Ever see those commercials on American TV for Sprint? $100/month for UNLIMITED EVERYTHING (voice [which includes LD], SMS, 3G...)

You'll never get that with the Bell - Rogers duopoly. And it won't be any better with this spectrum auction especially if Shaw Cable (Rogers' western cousin, and owner of crappy StarChoice TV) is the winner. Rules prohibit foreigners from coming in... you know if Sprint or T-Mobile or Verizon could come in they'd whup Rogers ass so bad it wouldn't be funny....

This is nuts....I can not belive that Rogers still doing same old fashion monopoly style pricing even there are some new entrants on the way Canadian market.

I was waiting to see how Rogers would manage to F*** up bringing the iphone to canada. They didn't disappoint. Geniuses.
  11. Petey the Geek says:
I guess I will stick to my Touch with Bell. $7 unlimited data.
I hate Rogers a little bit more now.

P.S. I still call it the Skydome!
  12. Gizmo n00b says:
    HAHA

Anyone who buys an iphone in Canada is an idiot.
  13. Rory says:
Also I keep seeing this thing about unlimited Wi-Fi access in Rogers hotspots.. which is fine and dandy that will help with data for most people in major cities IF its not just limited to ROGERS WiFi. Why do I get the funny fealing the iPhone is gonna have rogers trademark lockouts on using any WiFi or Wireless Router that isn't a Rogers hotspot. I'm in Manitoba.. Rogers doesn't have internet service here...

  15. Gizmo n00b says:
No,no,no, the minimum plan is not $60 a month. Who in his/her right mind would buy such a high tech toy without caller ID which is an extra $15. Then you've got their ridiculous "System Access Fee" which is an extra $7. Add GST and their minimum plan is a whopping $87,75 !!!
  16. po'd says:
ridiculous ... I work for Bell and was going to stand in line to get an iPhone when I heard that Rogers would offer an unlimited data plan with the iPhone, but then they do not dissapoint in pissing off everyone that thought this may be a turning point for Canadian wireless consumners. Rogers, you suck. Oh don't worry Bell and Telus suck too, but you suck the most Rogers for wasting an opportunity to dominate with the iPhone. Thing about it, is raising your ARPU $1.50 per existing user better than gaining a couple hundrend thousand new customers - fukin dumb asses.
  17. FedUp says:
I was hanging on to my 2 piece (smashed) Sanyo 8100 from Bell, just waiting and hoping that it would hold out long enough to exit my month to month and jump to Rogers for the sweet iPhone 3G . NOT A CHANCE with the newly announced packages. Currently, my Bell plan is 700 WD mins, free EVE (8:00pm) and WE, plus 20 free calls to a specific local number. Add in CD, VoiceMail, access fees and my $45/mo plan comes to $62.70 before taxes.

If Rogers had offered a 300 WD, unlimited incomming calls, free EVE & WE (7:00pm) + CD and access fees for $60 and offered even the measly 400MB/mo for $20/mo I would SO be there.

I'm exploring all other options now EXCEPT for the iPhone 3G via Robbers.

  18. Daddy Cools says:
My geek friend told me this would happen and he was right. I was going to get 2 more iphones. I already have a cracked 2.5G. My wife was going to steal mine.
The is the first time ever i wanted to swear on the web.
But Fkkk it and fkkk you rogers. CAN'T WAIT UNTIL SOMEDAY THERE IS A SIMILAR OR BETTER ALTERNATIVE. ROGERS I WILL NEVER FORGET THIS.
  19. Gizmo n00b says:
My current plan is around $60, for two phones (one for me and one for my wife). Granted, these aren't fancy-schmancy phones but they get the job done and have features we're happy with. Photo, music player, BlueTooth, and telephone functionality too (because that's what they are essentially and the main reason we bought them). And the two phones were free when we signed the contract.

I can't understand how someone would accept to pay such an outrageous price for such a limiting service for a device like the iPhone. Especially since it's a device built for all that multimedia functionality.

Again, there's the issue about people REALLY in need to actually surf the net anywhere and everywhere on such a small screen. I personnaly don't feel the need for such a thing. But for anyone who can't wait until the end of the bus ride to browse the net, well, if you accept to pay as much money for a service plan like this, can I give you my address so you can send me some spare money since you obvioulsy don't know what to do with it? lol!

IT WAS BITTER BUT WHAT CAN YOU DO WHEN YOUR A MAC FANBOY
  21. Wayde says:
Sorry to hear you're a Mac fan, sounds like a real ball-and-chain if it forces you to get ripped off. I would suggest learning how to use a real computer? But I'm warning you, PCs are complex. You'll probably have to learn what the Caps Lock button is all about.
