Rogers iPhone 3G Plans Leave Canadians Green for AT&T
Canadians are denied an unlimited wireless data plan! Not for your phone, not for my phone, and definitely not for iPhone. Canadians simply don’t get unlimited wireless data plans, Wayde-I-am. You can use 3G data rates if you must. You can use your 3G data rates on a bus.
But you’ll have to choose one Rogers plan, Wayde-I-am. But beware, use too many of iPhones amenities, you’ll soon pay Rogers outrageous penalties. And those are as popular as Green Eggs and Ham.
Rogers unveiled iPhone 3G price plans and has decided Canadians are laden with excess wealth. Be warned before you take a look at the chart – try not to let the 1995 Krug bubbly issue uncontrollably from your nostrils as it may leave an unsightly stain upon your New & Lingwoods.
Between forthcoming competition in Canadian wireless airwaves and Apple’s insistence, many were fooled into thinking Rogers would provide customers an unlimited data plan. It turns out to have been Apple that cracked in those long, closed-door meetings between Canada’s only GSM wireless carrier and builders of the GSM Smartphone-of-ages.

Rogers budget plan is a $60 monthly fee that gives you 150 minutes and a scant 400MB of data. That’s higher than the fee paid by Americans to AT&T for unlimited data for the iPhone Classic. Your Canadian iPhone subsidy requires a 3-year contract where our south-of-the-border brethren get off with a 2-year beating.
The high-end plan runs for $115 per-month. That gives you 800 minutes and 2 GB of data. The $115 of course doesn’t include tax and System Access Fees and other bonus charges Rogers is so deft at hiding.
So, should you, would you on a boat? Should you, would you with a goat? You will not like Green Eggs and iPhone’s data plan.
Funny, I thought shelling out a chunk of coin each month to them each month should be enough to gain me access.....oh well. Just grab your iPod Touch and sign up for BOINGO. 26 $/month for access to a ton of HotSpots...
All reports are showing the average user of an iphone uses 100mb a month. Mac blogs have users telling us Canadians they use 200mb-350mb on average. Of course, there are exceptions, but mostly these are people that live on YouTube.
The kick in the ass I wasn't expecting is the lousy voice plans that come with it. Firstly, I'll have to forgo my unlimited incoming calling (these days, this is doable, just unfair). Secondly, of their plans, the $75 has a voice plan more geared towards me, but I wouldn't want to pay for the extra 300mb, 'cause I won't use it.
The other kick in the ass, though we all knew it would come, is the 3yr contract. I can live with signing my life away to Rogers for 3yrs. Whatever. I just hate signing my life away to a plan that will almost definitely improve for late adopters a year from now---especially pissed if Rogers follows suit with AT&T and refuses to let you incorporate the next generation iphone (next year for sure, right?) to an existing contract.
*sigh*
I will stick with my unlocked phone on pay as you go... About $30.00 a month all inclusive with unlimited calls after 6:00 and weekends. Now that's a plan worth keeping!!!
Mine is $10 a month (plus SA Fees) and I get 250 DT mins unlimited evening and weekends starting at 6.
I was thinking of just adding the $30 300 MB Data plan but then I would lose the Visual Voicemail which is one of my favorite features.
It seems like Rogers is playing on the fact that people have no choice rather then making it affordable for everyone, which is what apple intended.
You'll never get that with the Bell - Rogers duopoly. And it won't be any better with this spectrum auction especially if Shaw Cable (Rogers' western cousin, and owner of crappy StarChoice TV) is the winner. Rules prohibit foreigners from coming in... you know if Sprint or T-Mobile or Verizon could come in they'd whup Rogers ass so bad it wouldn't be funny....

Roger is crazy
I hate Rogers a little bit more now.
P.S. I still call it the Skydome!
Anyone who buys an iphone in Canada is an idiot.
If Rogers had offered a 300 WD, unlimited incomming calls, free EVE & WE (7:00pm) + CD and access fees for $60 and offered even the measly 400MB/mo for $20/mo I would SO be there.
I'm exploring all other options now EXCEPT for the iPhone 3G via Robbers.
E.
The is the first time ever i wanted to swear on the web.
But Fkkk it and fkkk you rogers. CAN'T WAIT UNTIL SOMEDAY THERE IS A SIMILAR OR BETTER ALTERNATIVE. ROGERS I WILL NEVER FORGET THIS.
I can't understand how someone would accept to pay such an outrageous price for such a limiting service for a device like the iPhone. Especially since it's a device built for all that multimedia functionality.
Again, there's the issue about people REALLY in need to actually surf the net anywhere and everywhere on such a small screen. I personnaly don't feel the need for such a thing. But for anyone who can't wait until the end of the bus ride to browse the net, well, if you accept to pay as much money for a service plan like this, can I give you my address so you can send me some spare money since you obvioulsy don't know what to do with it? lol!
