iPhone vs Blackberry: 3G War Round One
Since Apple released iPhone, comparisons and speculation of market-battle between RIM and Apple have been inevitable. Now it looks like the two will finally go toe-to-toe in the 3G Smartphone arena. But RIM has announced delays of its upcoming 3G device in a possible feint to the left.
RIM’s Blackberry sits securely in domination of the business-phone but has been branching into the consumer friendly media-phone market with efforts like Curve. Now the mobile business giant is preparing the release of the 3G Blackberry 9000. It’s also rumored to be working on its own touch-screen, media friendly Blackberry that’s being hailed as a potential iPhone killer.
Apple’s iPhone is easily considered the top Smartphone for multi-media functions. But iPhone’s limited software and inability to sync with Outlook (Exchange) isolate it from overlap with Blackberry’s market. But iPhone’s business limitations are about to be dissolved and Apple plans an official 3G iPhone announcement in June. Many believe the announcement a ploy and that Apple will pull a surprise launch of the 3G iPhone in June.
This means June would have been when the two juggernauts intersected. But hold on… RIM has pulled a feint to the left and possibly evaded a head-to-head market battle with Apple, for now.
Suspiciously release of the upcoming 3G Blackberry is delayed due to what RIM is calling technical difficulties. Now it looks like the 3G Blackberry won’t hit the market until August or September. A local news source in RIM’s hometown of Waterloo Ontario downplays the delay.
But many speculate RIM’s delays are a tactic to avoid its launch being swallowed up in the circus that is a new Apple release. Whatever the case…Apple and RIM will eventually have to compete in the same market sometime this year.
Apple – RIM, you know the drill. No hitting below the belt, we want a clean, fair match. Now go into your corners and come out fighting!
I hear it's coming in June though.
SW 2.x of the iPhone is supposed to have an active sync feature but we'll see.
