HTC Touch: How to get your local weather

GuelphOne of the coolest features of the HTC Touch is the mobile phone’s weather forecast. It’s an HTC plug-in that sits atop the phone’s Windows Mobile operating system. From the phone’s home screen you can access today’s weather and a three day forecast with a simple touch of the screen.

One problem is the limited number of cities the weather plug-in covers. You’ll get a long list of international cities the first time you enter the weather section of the home screen, or when you tap the name of the city if it’s already setup.

The list of available cities is fine if you actually lived in one of them. But what if you have avoided one of the world’s great metropolises? Don’t despair - it’s regedit to the rescue.

An easy-to-use Mobile Registry Editor can be downloaded from Breaksoft.com. It’s an easy to use program you simply unzip its components into a folder on your desktop and when your mobile device is connected to the workstation, run the executable. You’ll get a standard Windows Regedit interface.

RegeditThe path is:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\HTCHome\Weather\Settings

Navigate your way to the Settings folder and open two keys, Location and Location Code. You simply double click to open the key and then enter your changes into the Value Data field.

The Location Code will require Accuweather.com’s code for your local area. For Guelph Ontario, Canada my code broke down like this:

NAM|CA|ON|GUELPH

NAM (North America) CA (Canada) ON (Ontario) GUELPH (the city where I live).

The Location code is whatever you want to call your city, it will appear on the top of the weather forecast screen on your HTC Touch.

Find your Accuweather.com Location Code

Go to http://www.accuweather.com/ and select World Weather or just go directly to AccuWeather Internationl from here.

AccuWeatherAccuWeather

From the International site you can navigate to your home town under Find Your Local Forecast. You’ll find your Location Code in the URL as shown.

Note: It’s important you don’t simply navigate to your country’s page in the AccuWeather site because the location code will not be embedded in the URL from the UK/Ireland, USA or Canada weather sites.

I have tried to get the weather for my town-Elko, NV in the US. I can't get it to work. All I get is the message- Unable to retrieve data for selected city. Select here to retry. I retry and get same message. I was wondering if you know any other way to get it to work. I am using the location code NAM|US|NV|ELKO. I don't know if you have an older phone then me but I found GUELPH, CA in the list of acceptable cities. Maybe this is why you are able to get it to work. Can you help me out please! you can email me if you can.
    Thank you very much

The only thing I can offer is make sure you're getting the Accuweather code for World Weather site, not your local accuweather page.

Also, try any other city you have to pick from the available list... make sure it works.

Now that you know that works try any city that isn't in the available list that you have to enter the code for... make sure it works.

Are you saying you can't get any weather downloaded to your HTC Touch for any city other than a default listed one?

I too tried this for Dalhousie New Brunswick Canada.

    Used NAM|CA|NB|DALHOUSIE with no success...:(

I have fallowed the steps on this page until I reached the "Find Your City" part and found the Canadian search and even found my city. Fort Saint John, BC. That is not the problem, the problem is that the city code it gave me doesn't match the criteria of the code listed here. It gives me a postal code and I am not sure if it will work:

    http://www.accuweather.com/canada-weather-forecast.asp?partner=accuweather&traveler=0&postalcode=V1J%201A2

    Any ideas??

I just can't believe that Telus as a corporation that is so called dedicated to customer support would not realize that 90% of the world doesn't know that 80% of BC exists... Go ahead and ask anyone you want to point out some of the nothern cities on these nice little apps. You really have two choices to live... Vancouver or Edmonton. Otherwise you will end up beating your head against the wall which not only makes it hard for me but imposable for the normal tech user.

Once you get your local weather to the HTC: How do you get it to stay on your scroll screen. I travel between two cities in different states and would like to be able to switch between the cities.
    Thanks

Mine wouldn't work until i selected another preset city and switched back to the city i added. I also did a soft reset a couple of times in between switching from my added city to a preset city. Hope this helps, Jeff D
