..."second you'd have to unlock it, that means hacking and risk a bricking."...

Although this may be true with AT&T, it is not necessarily true that you have to hack the iphone to unlock it. Apple provides a legal unlock for carriers who are bound by law to unlock their iPhones for customers. Some European carriers are doing that, and bringing those iPhones to Canada is no problem; no hacking needed.

The question is, can AT&T legally unlock the iPhone for you? Or will Apple Store eventually sell unlocked iPhones at full price?

If you bought the Rogers contract you shouldn't cancel the contract because you'll pay out the nose.

The purpose of buying one from AT&T is first, it's not Rogers, second you'd have to unlock it, that means hacking and risk a bricking.

A lot of people have done it in Canada, a process will likely be made rather easily.

And what happens if you buy into the rogers contract and then cancel the contract, thus paying a total of... what's that? $599 for the phone ($400 cancellation fee).
Seriously, does Rogers then re-brick your phone?

This will be the way to go. Buy a US phone from At&T (or unlocked phone) and put in your own contract-free SIM from Rogers. Then as soon as there is another GSM carrier in Canada, switch your number to them and say bye-bye to ROgers forever.

The only problem with this is that if the new copyright bill from Jim Prentice is allowed to become law, then it will be illegal to unlock a cell phone in Canada if one is already viably available here. So in order to have one, you not only have to reject our major telco's pricing places, you have to break the law. Oh Canada.
