Asus Japan announces Eee PC with Windows option

Asus Eee PCAsus Eee PCNo sooner did we get a look at the Eee PC with its special flavor of Linux than we hear of it spreading to Japan, with a 16 GB model and optional Windows XP system build. They get all the really good stuff over in East Asia.

North American Eee PCs have storage options that go all the way up an 8 GB model. But the rumor mill is at work pointing to extra options Asus’s beloved little computer will get when it’s released in Japan. These will include a 16 GB model which should eventually make its way here. The other significant development is an option to have your Asus Japan Eee PC pre-loaded with Windows XP.

For this device to really make it in the mainstream on either side of the Pacific Ocean, Asus might want to consider giving all markets the Windows option. No doubt the snappy response of its custom Linux OS would be severely downgraded with Windows. But the average person looking at ultra-portable, mini-PC options will probably want the most common operating system in the universe.

If you’re somewhat technically inclined you can always install Windows XP on your North American Eee PC. And as for the extra storage space offered by Eee PC 16 GB - it’s really no big deal. With USB thumb drives reaching deep into double-digit GB capacities, sticking extra storage on one of Eee PC’s many USB ports is an easy, low-budget way to expand storage.
