Oscar Nominated Gone Baby Gone now available on Blu-ray
Gone Baby GoneAmy Ryan got an Academy nod for one of the sleeper hits of the year. Gone Baby Gone sneaks up on store shelves today. This intense crime drama is directed by first timer Ben Affleck and stars his own brother Casey Affleck. Its co-star, Amy Ryan earned an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress playing a strung out mom who positively steals the show.
I’ll be the first to admit that Ben Affleck directing his own brother in a movie sounds like a recipe for disaster. It’s like a company’s CEO hiring a bunch of old college buddies for top positions. It doesn’t exactly instill much confidence. But this time it’s just not the case!
Ben Affleck’s direction may not come off as that of a seasoned professional. But I welcomed seeing a film that lacks the slick polish of too many of today’s thrillers. The dour moodiness of several scenes taking place in the trash-strewn streets of Boston lends the film a kind of indie feel. When action erupts in the film it looks downright photojournalistic, especially the memorable scene where Casey Affleck shakes down suspects at a dive in the wrong side of town.
Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan play two inexperienced private investigators hired to find a little girl taken from her crack addicted, white-trash mom (Amy Ryan). They uncover a deep story full of twists that was adapted from a novel by Dennis Lehane, author of Mystic River.
It’s probably the safest bet for viewing this weekend if you’re looking for a new release available on DVD or Blu-ray.
