NASA and Blu-ray owners celebrate Across the Universe Day
BeatlesYesterday was the 40th anniversary of the recording of the Beatles song Across the Universe. To mark the event last night at midnight GMT, NASA beamed the song written by John Lennon into space toward Polaris, the North Star.
It may be true that in space, nobody can hear you scream. But now they can hear John Lennon call out "Jai Guru Deva Ohm" at 180,000 miles per-second. NASA is using what it calls the deep space network to capitalize on the Beatles brand. I only hope that NASA has taken care of proper licensing so as to not upset the RIAA for giving away copyrighted music for free. We’d hate to see the NASA, Across the Universe day celebration get Qtrax’ed.
Of the event, John Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono said: "I see this as the beginning of the new age in which we will communicate with billions of planets across the universe." That’s so beautifully hippie, Ms Ono… Now where did I put my water-bong?
Blu-ray owners can celebrate Across the Universe in their own way by purchasing a copy of the just released disc in stores today.
High Def Digest, the DVD review site, gives the Blu-ray high marks for video and audio quality but found the film itself to be mediocre. Sadly the soundtrack is only Dolby True HD. That means no super-sounding, uncompressed PCM through which to hear all that beautifully restored Beatles music.
