Blu-ray class action lawsuit over Samsung Blu-ray players
A group of consumers is seeking $5,000,000 in damages against Samsung of America for selling defective Blu-ray disc players. The group says Samsung has knowingly sold defective Blu-ray players since June 2006 when the company released the BD-P1000.
GizmoRepublic.com readers heard it here first! Anticipation of a class action suit against Samsung over Blu-ray players that don’t meet manufacturer’s promises has finally come.
The lawsuit is over the disc compatibility issues suffered by many Samsung players. It may come as some surprise that if you buy a Blu-ray player you still can’t playback all Blu-ray movie discs. Most players on the market require firmware updates before it’ll play many newer discs.
Samsungs has said it’ll release firmware updates to provide most of its players with the ability to play popular new movie titles.
The lead plaintiff says he bought a BD-P1200 last summer and it’s unable to playback certain titles. It’s a known issue for the BD-P1200 that it can’t playback Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer and The Day After Tomorrow. Since Samsung was unwilling to release a firmware update to provide compatibility to these Blu-ray discs, the group has decided to file the lawsuit against Samsung.
It was only a matter of time before someone filed a class action suit against a Blu-ray manufacturer. Incompatibility issues have dogged the Blu-ray format since its inception. The only Blu-ray player that can playback all movie titles without any problems seems to be Sony’s PlayStation3.
The problem with playing back movies seems to stem from the DRM copy protection included on the discs. Blu-ray has an extra layer of protection (not included on competitor HD DVD movies discs) called BD+ intended to prevent consumers from making digital copies of the movie discs.
