Xbox 360 with built-in HD DVD: It’s CES rumor time again!

Xbox 360Xbox 360The latest rumor hot off the word-pad at UberGizmo and CrunchGear is juicier than a coronary bypass. It has Bill Gates, that young man who formed Microsoft, announcing a new version of Xbox 360 with a built-in HD DVD player at CES 2008.

It’s just speculation with no evidence, links or sources for now. But this is to be Gates’ last CES as head of Microsoft. It’s likely that he’ll want to go out with a bang and new version of Xbox 360 might be the fuel.

How do the Xbox-erati feel about their favorite game console getting a significant HD facelift? It could range from disinterest to outrage.

You might be angry if you just spent money on a brand-new HDMI/Falcon chipped Xbox 360. But there is a lot of profit at stake in the HD format war. It’s possible that Microsoft Games Division is willing to make a sacrifice to promote HD DVD which stands to huge long term profits for all companies involved.

Many feel it’s inevitable that at some point Xbox 360 will get a built-in HD DVD player. It’s interesting that the console has undergone so many changes since it was first released. Are incremental upgrades the future of home entertainment consoles?

One possibility, if there is a new xbox 360 with a built in HD DVD drive. They can use multi-format disks for future games. So the same disk can be used in the standard xbox DVD drive. And the HD DVD enabled xbox 360 can use the extended storage capabilities of the HD DVD. Perhaps there may be game additional material on the disk.
