Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 War of Words

PS3 v Xbox 360Two current generation consoles comprise the biggest rivalry since Ranger Rick first tried to foil Yogi’s picnic basket larceny. Even though Nintendo’s Wii has secretly been running away with sales figures to die for, manufacturers of the premium priced consoles continue to wage a war of words.

I read a so-called InformativePost (entitled PS3 vs Xbox 360) on Google News this morning that has me a bit annoyed. I’ll work it over a bit here but won’t link to it. The so-called news story is written by a self-styled PS3 supporter and the article allegedly compares the two consoles. His conclusion is that that PS3 is the better product and everyone is entitled to their own opinion – even it is wrong!

The writer comes to that conclusion because he believes that the PlayStation 3 Network is now better than Xbox Live because it’s free. The article looks at available games and concludes that Haze is comparable to Halo 3. If his criterion is games beginning with the letter H, then he has a valid point.

Xbox Live happens to be the largest online console gaming community ever. It stands so high above Sony in numeric popularity that Sony doesn’t even register. Sony’s Network is free of course because it has to be to even consider competing with Xbox Live.

Home is said to be the upcoming killer app for Sony’s online community. Truth be told - it looks innovative and cool as hell! If the social online, massively multiplayer world based around PlayStation 3 is a smash hit it may just tip the online scale to something near equal with Xbox Live or even beat it in the long run.

At a time when Sony is gloating about its sales numbers exceeding Xbox 360s in Europe, Microsoft disputes the numbers. In fact Xbox live product management director Aaron Greenberg said he’s confident Xbox 360 will extend its lead over PS3 in 2008.

The rivalry is heating up and if Microsoft isn’t careful, Sony might just end up running away with a sandwich from its picnic basket.

"Truth be told, if PS did charge for their network, i'd subscribe"

Why??? have you tried gta4 online with ps3? it`s not rockstar`s fault?
  3. Gizmo n00b says:
PS3 is so late to the party that they might as well just look ahead to the ps4. The PSN will never match XboxLive this round
  4. Mick says:
Sony should have charged a competatively priced fee for PSN when it lanched the PS3, that way when a popular online game was released they could have made sure they provided the extra servers it would require.
The trouble now is that most people who value online gaming and arent blinded by fanboyism would admit that PSN isn't worth paying for in it's current state and if or when Sony realise that the best way to provide a better service is to charge a small fee, they are going to have a problem convincing anybody to change their mind.
I have all three current consoles and most of the previous generations too, i love them all for different reasons but i always buy the 360 version of muli-plaform games simply because of Live, even the troubled Dreamcast took online gaming more seriously than Sony did.

How can Microsoft extend its lead over Sony's ps3 using the xbox 360? PS3 has better technology meaning it has a higher potential of what can be developed which was clearly shown during PS day where they showed a gameplay demonstration of Killzone 2 in pre-alpha mode. I love how everyone hypes up Gears of War 2 graphics when its already been beaten by Killzone 2 at pre-alpha mode. As for gameplay - Gears of War 2 has a clear edge with its cinematic gunfights and chainsaw duels. For the network...Sony keeps delaying Home and I almost feel as if it won't come out until late 2009. Xbox Live is a great network, but can't compare to what you can do on Home. Also staying with the year 2008....great games for the PS3 are coming along. GTA IV started it off for both consoles. Metal Gear Solid 4 and Haze are due out this summer for the PS3 only. Don't expect Ninja Gaiden 2 for the xbox 360 to even compete with those two. Splinter Cell: Conviction hasn't even been talked about by fans of the Splinter Cell series - so don't even expect that to compete. All Microsoft has this year is Gears of War 2 - do they think they can stand strong against its competitors with one great game? And what if it didn't turn out to be a great game, what if it was shit at the end? That would kill them. Luckily Sony has a pack of games coming out just as Microsoft did for 2007 (Halo, Bioshock, Gears of War, & Mass Effect). Also if FFXIII does come out this year or possibly even a demo, xbox 360 would be the one to get an upgrade to possible xbox 720. Not to mention LittleBigPlanet....

Well true the PS3 has been brought into this generation in a flaming baptism of high prices and few and limited genre games. But i must say that it has done rather well and the fact that it sell's in japan could tip the global hardware sales in it's favour. Microsoft was gloating last week that 60% of gta4 sales where on the 360 and that would appears a good result at first but considering the 360 has sold 6 million more consoles then sony i would be starting to get worried as PS3 owners are notoriously brand loyal I think the 360's best selling point right now is it's much lower price point not it's live service. People are much more concious of their pockets then the fluency and standard of their multiplayer network.
    *Please excuse any bad spelling
ME just trying to give a nuetral position.
  7. Numanthia says:
Yeah I have to agree Xbox live sucks. It is not worth $50 and Sony is starting to eat Microsoft alive this year.

Gotta give credit where credit is due, Sony has out manuvered Microsoft on this one!
  8. lol noobs says:
lol this is just a xbox fanboy article, truth is the ps3 is just getting started and the 360 is almost dead. Ps2 will most likely out live the 360 and the xbox fanbabys will be able to say their xbox3 is better than ps3 while ignoring all the obvious signs of microsoft milking money from them and lying constantly.
  9. Numanthia says:
Don't you guys know anything? The xbox live service is peer to peer based. It cannot compete with PSN. There is a reason that Halo 3 could only have 16 simultaneous players - 16 that is it! Pathetic. Warhawk plays beautifully with 32 simulatneous players and Resistance is insane with 40! And Resistance 2 is going to 60 simultaneous players - freaking crazy!!!!!

You shouldn't comment on topics you are not fully educated on. Xbox live is a severly limited and a poorly structured service as opposed to the newer and better designed PSN!

  11. Gizmo n00b says:
You sony whores are hilarious! Sony's network sucks, as there is NO free lunch. That is exactly why sony's network is garbage. Nothing is unified, nothing ties it all together, the game makers set the network, NOT sony. Xbox live is ruled, and regulated by Microsoft, everything has to fit their criteria. Xbox live does so much better in all aspects it's not even funny. It's not even worth arguing, sony is a half rate system, that people originally buy now so they can watch blue ray movies here and there, with gaming when they feel like it.

Get used to 3rd place, you ain't leaving that last place position. That's the bottom line, I mean seriously, do you really thing Metal gear, and Grand tourismo will sell 20 million ps3's all at once? Sony needs that in order to even compete in this race. The United States is the strong arm in this battle, and the ps3 is not going to pass the 360. End of story!
  12. Billy says:
This is a joke right? The ps3 will never pass the 360. It's a newer piece of equipment, and none of it's games look better than the 360's. Seriously, Gears of war came out in 2006, and NOT ONE game on the ps3 looks better. Just look at the newest hit GTA 4, it runs in 640P on the ps3, and HD 720p on the 360. "But sony's cell processor is so great I want to make love to it" Says the sony fanboy! ha ha. The cell is a physics processor, not a gaming processor, hence the problem in making games run better, and look better.

The cold hard truth is the 360 is the hardcore gamers machine, nothing is going to change that, if you want to play the best, you play on Xbox Live, and the Xbox 360.
  13. SS4Gogeta says:
As the owner of both systems I see advantages of both systems. I am a Home! beta tester and have GTA IV on both systems. I spend most of my time on the 360 because I have many friends I play with on Live. I honestly don't understand how people with only one perspective (own one console and not the other) can speak to both pros and cons.

Live is awesome! With so much to offer from movies and TV shows etc... The PSN is new and very robust. I like them both.

Truth be told the 360's days are numbered. The PS3 has far more potential. The Blu-ray alone is a tipping point.

I've been on Xbox live for the last couple of years and I have nothing bad to say. If I want a Demo I get it in about 5-10 minutes for a large file(1.4 GB) The friends list and online gameplay is awesome, if not simply amazing. Yes MS charges 50 bucks a year, that is nothing for the constant available at your finger tips service they provide. I simply love it.
Now, I do also own a PS3; I must say it's an amazing machine, I'm very happy with it but the online is down right dreadful. I downloaded the HAZE Demo this weekend and it took 18 hours!!! MS would have taken about 5-10 min for the same size file (1.4 GB) the reason being? The 50 bucks you give MS allows them to have dedicated servers to supply you with the best possible service, Sony doesn't offer this and they can't without charging you the consumer so all FanBoy comments aside, Xbox Live is simply a superior service. I believe Sony can do the same and I hope they do, but expect to pay for it.
  15. seeunextuesday says:
He is right that haze will not compare to halo3, but everything else is bull explain how live is better besides in-game XMB??? Not worth the money. plus ps3 has more hopefull releases coming out next couple of years.
  16. ps says:
peer 2 peer on a pay service is unacceptable.

PC games have had dedicated servers for years (FOR FREE!).

    Dedicated servers make the 'experience'.

Hey Numanthia, I hope for your sake a savant at playing the piano or something because your reading comprehension skills suck.

the article above didn't address the technical infrasture of either network. It just said that Xbox Live is better which it is. It's online community, more players = more better.

A month ago Call of Duty 4 was crowned the undisputed king of online gaming. Xbox Live has an unsurpassed 1.3 million playing Call of Duty 4 every day - just that one game. These aren't Microsoft numbers, these are touted by Infinity Ward who also made the game for PS3.

Where were Sony PlayStation Network numbers? They were simply inconsequential or the network lacks the infrastructure to make such a tally.

    I rest my case.
  18. johnson says:
Hmmm.... thats why dirt had over 100 players? hmmm.... better do your homework bud. the game developers have to rely on 3rd party web sites to use psn!! microsoft has it`s own dedicated servers for every game! did you play gta4 on psn? oh wait, you cant! hahahaha because psn suks now and forever, even when home gets here in 2010!
  19. ME says:
Billy, hey the cell processor is not a physics processor it is a cpu while it does carry out physics processes' for the sony ps3 it is not it's only function it acts in the exact same way as the xbox's cpu their is no difference except that the cell processor is a bit more powerful that said it will still take developers a long time to completely understand how to utilise it properly. Not only that but you as an xbox fan should know raw power doesn't gaurantee victory as the ps2 was an inferior console last time out but exclusives really won them the game. This time round their are few exclusives and the race will be much closer but
I don't know if it will be the ps3 or 360 that comes out on top but it will probably be settled by next summer as one pulls away this is a deciding year also for every one of course the guy who works for microsoft is going to say their going to win ya need to take sony and microsoft announcements with a pinch of salt.
  20. Gizmo n00b says:
    = more better?

Hey, I was being folksy and a bit ironic in my contortion of language. It's called grammatical Yoga. I'm gettin' stressed out over here!
  22. Mornelithe says:
Truth be told, Sony didn't have a serious need for a robust online community until the PS3, as they'd already conquered the games market with the PS2. That having been said, no one can argue that XBL has more to offer at this point in time...but on that same token, noone can argue that XBL has been out and being improved upon since what, 2004-05?

While Sony's definitely dragging their heels on their Home update, and the rest of the online community, given the scope and range of what Home will offer...is anyone truly surprised it keeps getting delayed? While I've not been one, of late, to sing the praises of Sony. I do have to admit that the amount of catchup needed, isn't small, by any means...and should be given as much time as necessary.

Eventually, Home will be finished, and available for the open beta...only time can tell whether it will make a true competitor for the XBL service. To be honest, Sony's got it's hands deeper into the pockets of the movie/music/entertainment industry than MS, so they _should_ be able to connect alot of that into home. As I said though, only time will tell.

As for games...MS and the Xbox community had a wonderful 2007. Is anyone surprised that in the PS3's second year, a huge windfall of their AAA Apps are incoming, and will most likely stretch into early/mid/late 2009. It's interesting when you think about it really...who can be surprised? Sony has more internal devs MS...by a good 3 or 4 times. Obviously, these devs are working quite diligently to bring the newest iterations of their PS2 ruling games to the PS3. But at the same time...MS isn't completely run by idiots (Not a huge fan of MS, but trying to be neutral here), and therefore we should be expecting some huge announcements to counter the hype of Sony's heavy hitters as well. Although, one must question what IP would take any steam out of MGS4, or FFXIII hype, for that matter.

I'm no fanboi of any system... I believe consumer electronics are there to serve me and my interests not the other way around. But currently Xbox 360 is the best system. If that were to change I would buy a Sony product in an instant and sing its praises. I have no loyalty to Microsoft - per se.

That said... the upcoming Home community does look pretty cool. As you said Mornelithe, Sony is playing catch up... it only makes sense they have an advantage to look at what Microsft is and isn't doing well and imrpove on it. Home may just be it!

  24. EA sports says:
no ones mentioned that EA recently bought Bioware and Pandemic (accordingto google news), both were making 360 exclusives... I would expect EA to change that...
  25. JS says:
The 360 has been out for far longer than the PS3 so you can not really compare total sales figures of the 360 to the PS3 and say that the former is better or more popular. (If that were the case then the winner would be the PS2)

The 360 is in the same market as the PS3, but it is underpowered and unreliable. It may still prevail, but that looks unlikely. The 360 will slowly slip into the past as more people get TVs can actually display 1080p and buy the PS3 as a great gaming console with blu-ray capability.

I also agree with one of the above posts that if Sony charged a modest annual fee for online gaming then I would be happy to pay it, though i do hope that nobody from Sony actually reads this :-)

    Happy gaming!

  26. Sony Marketing Rep says:
Don't worry, monthly PSN fees are in the works when Mr. Kutaragi's master plan kicks and PS3 really takes off in three or four years from now when the world realizes how superior it really is... then our user base will be close enough to Xbox Live that we'll begin billing you a monthly.

Dammit people, we're Sony, not the United Way!

oh and I forgot hows your HD_DVD addon doing? keep it clean man I here they dont like DUST. Oh and dont forget to say Hi to the FEDex driver when you see him again as he will be bringing your sixth 360 by shortly. also I always wondered IF MS prorated the XBOX live service for the dreadful times that you are waiting on those slow FEDex drivers to bring you your consoles. I mean you paid for the service but you cant play cause things got a little toasty. You animal.

Well its off to play my shitty overpriced PS3 with crappy no good games and that horribble free online service. I will be hoping that the fedex driver dosent get lost on the way to your house because you have alot of money in that fabulous machine with that awesome service. OH wait he has been there before a few times I am sure he can find it.

Man I wish I were you.
