Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 War of Words
Two current generation consoles comprise the biggest rivalry since Ranger Rick first tried to foil Yogi’s picnic basket larceny. Even though Nintendo’s Wii has secretly been running away with sales figures to die for, manufacturers of the premium priced consoles continue to wage a war of words.
I read a so-called InformativePost (entitled PS3 vs Xbox 360) on Google News this morning that has me a bit annoyed. I’ll work it over a bit here but won’t link to it. The so-called news story is written by a self-styled PS3 supporter and the article allegedly compares the two consoles. His conclusion is that that PS3 is the better product and everyone is entitled to their own opinion – even it is wrong!
The writer comes to that conclusion because he believes that the PlayStation 3 Network is now better than Xbox Live because it’s free. The article looks at available games and concludes that Haze is comparable to Halo 3. If his criterion is games beginning with the letter H, then he has a valid point.
Xbox Live happens to be the largest online console gaming community ever. It stands so high above Sony in numeric popularity that Sony doesn’t even register. Sony’s Network is free of course because it has to be to even consider competing with Xbox Live.
Home is said to be the upcoming killer app for Sony’s online community. Truth be told - it looks innovative and cool as hell! If the social online, massively multiplayer world based around PlayStation 3 is a smash hit it may just tip the online scale to something near equal with Xbox Live or even beat it in the long run.
At a time when Sony is gloating about its sales numbers exceeding Xbox 360s in Europe, Microsoft disputes the numbers. In fact Xbox live product management director Aaron Greenberg said he’s confident Xbox 360 will extend its lead over PS3 in 2008.
The rivalry is heating up and if Microsoft isn’t careful, Sony might just end up running away with a sandwich from its picnic basket.

Why??? have you tried gta4 online with ps3? it`s not rockstar`s fault?
The trouble now is that most people who value online gaming and arent blinded by fanboyism would admit that PSN isn't worth paying for in it's current state and if or when Sony realise that the best way to provide a better service is to charge a small fee, they are going to have a problem convincing anybody to change their mind.
I have all three current consoles and most of the previous generations too, i love them all for different reasons but i always buy the 360 version of muli-plaform games simply because of Live, even the troubled Dreamcast took online gaming more seriously than Sony did.
*Please excuse any bad spelling
ME just trying to give a nuetral position.
Gotta give credit where credit is due, Sony has out manuvered Microsoft on this one!
You shouldn't comment on topics you are not fully educated on. Xbox live is a severly limited and a poorly structured service as opposed to the newer and better designed PSN!
Get used to 3rd place, you ain't leaving that last place position. That's the bottom line, I mean seriously, do you really thing Metal gear, and Grand tourismo will sell 20 million ps3's all at once? Sony needs that in order to even compete in this race. The United States is the strong arm in this battle, and the ps3 is not going to pass the 360. End of story!
The cold hard truth is the 360 is the hardcore gamers machine, nothing is going to change that, if you want to play the best, you play on Xbox Live, and the Xbox 360.
Live is awesome! With so much to offer from movies and TV shows etc... The PSN is new and very robust. I like them both.
Truth be told the 360's days are numbered. The PS3 has far more potential. The Blu-ray alone is a tipping point.
PSN ID: SS4Gogeta, Gamertag: SS4GogetaTX
Now, I do also own a PS3; I must say it's an amazing machine, I'm very happy with it but the online is down right dreadful. I downloaded the HAZE Demo this weekend and it took 18 hours!!! MS would have taken about 5-10 min for the same size file (1.4 GB) the reason being? The 50 bucks you give MS allows them to have dedicated servers to supply you with the best possible service, Sony doesn't offer this and they can't without charging you the consumer so all FanBoy comments aside, Xbox Live is simply a superior service. I believe Sony can do the same and I hope they do, but expect to pay for it.
PC games have had dedicated servers for years (FOR FREE!).
Dedicated servers make the 'experience'.
the article above didn't address the technical infrasture of either network. It just said that Xbox Live is better which it is. It's online community, more players = more better.
A month ago Call of Duty 4 was crowned the undisputed king of online gaming. Xbox Live has an unsurpassed 1.3 million playing Call of Duty 4 every day - just that one game. These aren't Microsoft numbers, these are touted by Infinity Ward who also made the game for PS3.
Where were Sony PlayStation Network numbers? They were simply inconsequential or the network lacks the infrastructure to make such a tally.
I rest my case.
I don't know if it will be the ps3 or 360 that comes out on top but it will probably be settled by next summer as one pulls away this is a deciding year also for every one of course the guy who works for microsoft is going to say their going to win ya need to take sony and microsoft announcements with a pinch of salt.
i rest my case
Hey, I was being folksy and a bit ironic in my contortion of language. It's called grammatical Yoga. I'm gettin' stressed out over here!
While Sony's definitely dragging their heels on their Home update, and the rest of the online community, given the scope and range of what Home will offer...is anyone truly surprised it keeps getting delayed? While I've not been one, of late, to sing the praises of Sony. I do have to admit that the amount of catchup needed, isn't small, by any means...and should be given as much time as necessary.
Eventually, Home will be finished, and available for the open beta...only time can tell whether it will make a true competitor for the XBL service. To be honest, Sony's got it's hands deeper into the pockets of the movie/music/entertainment industry than MS, so they _should_ be able to connect alot of that into home. As I said though, only time will tell.
As for games...MS and the Xbox community had a wonderful 2007. Is anyone surprised that in the PS3's second year, a huge windfall of their AAA Apps are incoming, and will most likely stretch into early/mid/late 2009. It's interesting when you think about it really...who can be surprised? Sony has more internal devs MS...by a good 3 or 4 times. Obviously, these devs are working quite diligently to bring the newest iterations of their PS2 ruling games to the PS3. But at the same time...MS isn't completely run by idiots (Not a huge fan of MS, but trying to be neutral here), and therefore we should be expecting some huge announcements to counter the hype of Sony's heavy hitters as well. Although, one must question what IP would take any steam out of MGS4, or FFXIII hype, for that matter.

I'm no fanboi of any system... I believe consumer electronics are there to serve me and my interests not the other way around. But currently Xbox 360 is the best system. If that were to change I would buy a Sony product in an instant and sing its praises. I have no loyalty to Microsoft - per se.
That said... the upcoming Home community does look pretty cool. As you said Mornelithe, Sony is playing catch up... it only makes sense they have an advantage to look at what Microsft is and isn't doing well and imrpove on it. Home may just be it!
The 360 is in the same market as the PS3, but it is underpowered and unreliable. It may still prevail, but that looks unlikely. The 360 will slowly slip into the past as more people get TVs can actually display 1080p and buy the PS3 as a great gaming console with blu-ray capability.
I also agree with one of the above posts that if Sony charged a modest annual fee for online gaming then I would be happy to pay it, though i do hope that nobody from Sony actually reads this :-)
Happy gaming!

Dammit people, we're Sony, not the United Way!
How are you? I was just writing to ask how your fifth XBOX console was doing. Hey just in case you needed to know I here they make a killer water cooling kit for the 360 now. Its killer.
oh and I forgot hows your HD_DVD addon doing? keep it clean man I here they dont like DUST. Oh and dont forget to say Hi to the FEDex driver when you see him again as he will be bringing your sixth 360 by shortly. also I always wondered IF MS prorated the XBOX live service for the dreadful times that you are waiting on those slow FEDex drivers to bring you your consoles. I mean you paid for the service but you cant play cause things got a little toasty. You animal.
Well its off to play my shitty overpriced PS3 with crappy no good games and that horribble free online service. I will be hoping that the fedex driver dosent get lost on the way to your house because you have alot of money in that fabulous machine with that awesome service. OH wait he has been there before a few times I am sure he can find it.
Man I wish I were you.
sucker
Bill and the boys thank you for your contribution to their retirement account.
BTW the fedEX driver is doing fine, he's asked me to say hi to your mom for him while you're in her basement playing with your PS3.
