Xbox 360 and Media Center with Blu-ray

360 with Blu-ray360 with Blu-rayIs an expansion coming for the Xbox 360 that will let it playback Blu-ray discs? That’s the latest Xbox 360 rumor. The rumor has an Xbox 360 - Blu-ray expansion coming out as early as May. According to Microsoft insider reports a prototype has already been developed and could be fast tracked into production.

No details follow but we will predict it’ll be capable of 1080P (with an HDMI Xbox 360) and probably not able to stream the advanced audio codecs found on some Blu-ray discs. But advanced audio codecs on an Xbox 360 Blu-ray player would definitely rock, so do it Microsoft!

Adding support to the claims of Xbox 360 Blu-ray activities are rumors from OEM manufacturers. They say they’re preparing media center machines with Blu-ray. Last week Niveus tossed HD DVD from its new media center machines and will begin adding Blu-ray.

Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment, Michael Ephraim said Sony would welcome Microsoft over to the Blu-ray side. He went on to say that it’s only logical for them to adopt Blu-ray as it’s been a very successful device for driving PS3 sales.

Of course Sony is going to attribute much of the format war victory to PlayStation3 using a built-in Blu-ray player from the start. They might have a valid point.

See how the HD DVD / Blu-ray format war ended right here!
