In the face of HD DVD's demise Microsoft decided to stop making the expansion drives for Xbox 360, the move probably came as little surprise. But what are retailers doing with all those HD DVD drives inXbox 360 hd dvd their inventories? I smell a fire-sale!

If you already owned an Xbox 360, getting in on the high-def movie viewing was easy because the HD DVD add-on has always been the most economical way.  Now the add-on player is even cheaper at Best Buy.

On Monday morning a Best Buy ad ran that put Microsoft's Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on at $50! That's down from $129 the previous week.

But does anyone actually want an HD DVD player? Considering the format war is over - it might be a good time to think about it.

Just like anything we invest in, we want some sense of security that what we're buying isn't rendered obsolete in the near future. So why would anyone want to buy a player for a dead format?

One way of looking at it is that the format isn't dead, at least not yet. There are movies still available now and more still coming. Obviously you don't want to fool yourself into thinking there is any long term benefit to owning an HD DVD player. But if have an HDTV and a desire to see Batman Begins and Transformers in glorious high-def - this is the cheapest way possible.

Now all we have to do is wait for some of those HD DVD movies to drop in price.

Is it really necessary to view a DVD at such clarity to a point where every pore and dust particle can be seen?
