PlayStation3PlayStation3Whether you own the 20, 60 or new 80GB version of PlayStation3, you can upgrade your storage with a regular computer hard drive.

One of the key advantages of Sony's PlayStation3 is its compatibility with a standard (cheap) hard drive available at any computer store. Unlike other console game systems... ahem, Microsoft you don't need an overpriced and undersized proprietary hardware to upgrade storage.

All it takes is a standard 2.5-inch, SATA HDD up to 250GB. If you required even more storage you can also add up to 500GB of external storage to your PS3. Giant hard drives don't affect the speed of your PS3, nor do they void your warranty or get you into any trouble with Sony.

In fact Sony encourages upgrading storage space. A recent blog post on Sony's official PlayStation Blog linked to a step-by-step PS3 HDD upgrade tutorial.

Easy hard drive upgrades has to be one of the best advantages of the PS3. But let's not forget built-in Wi-Fi. Oh, yes and Blu-ray. Forget it, PS3 is a technology powerhouse. Considering its price is lower than when the system was launched, PS3 might just be a cheaper option than some of the competition. Now if only it could get some decent games.

dude it sucks. there are no games. there arent any coming.... MGS is maybe one.... but with the crappy sequel they put out on ps2 im not sure i care about that one. yes it is nice you can upgrade cheap, but if really all you bought was a blueray player than who cares about hard drives?

Kazriko writes:

Always remember to keep the original hard drive though. If you have to send it back to Sony, you'll want to send it with the original drive. Otherwise, they might keep your larger drive and send you back one that is the original size, as well as potentially trying to blame problems on your drive.

Gizmo n00b writes:

That's all very nice, but it's still a deal with the devil when you buy from the evil Sony corporation. Has everyone forgotten Sony's rootkit attack on its own customers?

Wayde writes:

Absolutely, rootkit was evil! I hope Sony has learned its lesson.

Don't worry, monthly PSN fees are in the works when Mr. Kutaragi's master plan kicks and PS3 really takes off in three or four years from now when the world realizes how superior it really is... then our user base will be close enough to Xbox Live that we'll begin billing you a monthly.

Dammit people, we're Sony, not the United Way!

The 360 has been out for far longer than the PS3 so you can not really compare total sales figures of the 360 to the PS3 and say that the former is better or more popular. (If that were the case then the winner would be the PS2)

The 360 is in the same market as the PS3, but it is underpowered and unreliable. It may still prevail, but that looks unlikely. The 360 will slowly slip into the past as more people get TVs can actually display 1080p and buy the PS3 as a great gaming console with blu-ray capability.

I also agree with one of the above posts that if Sony charged a modest annual fee for online gaming then I would be happy to pay it, though i do hope that nobody from Sony actually reads this :-)

    Happy gaming! JS
