PlayStation 3 firmware update coming, gets new Blu-ray profile and DivX
PlayStation 3PlayStation 3 could get its next major update, including an upgrade to the PlayStation 3 Blu-ray firmware and full support of the DivX codec, as soon as tomorrow, says CrunchGear.com.
Xbox 360 just started supporting DivX in its recent update, so now it's DivX time for PlayStation 3. CrunchGear is reporting that Sony could roll out its upgrade, tomorrow based on a ReadMe file from Sony that claimed the update will arrive Dec. 18.
Blu-ray Profile 1.1
The most significant update is full support for Blu-ray profile 1.1. Many home-theater enthusiasts who bought a PS3 for the cheap Blu-ray player and not so much for gaming will be happy.
There had been doubts that such a firmware revision was possible for the PS3 because profile 1.1 requires additional optical hardware that isn't present in most 1.0 Blu-ray players.
The new profile revision to the Blu-ray player means the PlayStation 3 will play back picture-in-picture content found on some Blu-ray discs. This optional sub-picture can be viewed while the movie plays in the main picture.
There aren't many Blu-ray movies out right now that take advantage of this ability but that's probably because almost no Blu-ray players sold today meet the requirements for profile 1.1.
Now you'll be able to get your geek on with forthcoming Blu-ray titles when they demonstrate how they drew the giant CGI monster while you get to watch it crush buildings on film.
Other important features in the new update include support for more codecs. Soon your PS3 will play back DivX and Microsoft WMV files.

Don't worry, monthly PSN fees are in the works when Mr. Kutaragi's master plan kicks and PS3 really takes off in three or four years from now when the world realizes how superior it really is... then our user base will be close enough to Xbox Live that we'll begin billing you a monthly.
Dammit people, we're Sony, not the United Way!JS said on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 War of Words:
The 360 has been out for far longer than the PS3 so you can not really compare total sales figures of the 360 to the PS3 and say that the former is better or more popular. (If that were the case then the winner would be the PS2)
The 360 is in the same market as the PS3, but it is underpowered and unreliable. It may still prevail, but that looks unlikely. The 360 will slowly slip into the past as more people get TVs can actually display 1080p and buy the PS3 as a great gaming console with blu-ray capability.
I also agree with one of the above posts that if Sony charged a modest annual fee for online gaming then I would be happy to pay it, though i do hope that nobody from Sony actually reads this :-)
Happy gaming! JS
