Is an Xbox 360 Blu-ray player in the works?
Blu-ray is crowned next-gen optical disc storage and it’s included in PS3: How long before Sony competitor Microsoft decides to pack one into its Xbox 360 gaming machine? That’s what I asked myself when I found the rumor already circulating.
It’s probably no surprise Microsoft will dump its Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on. In light of Toshiba’s announcement that it’s ceded victory to Blu-ray and dropping production of HD DVD players, it’s only a matter of time.
Blu-ray wins the disc format war
Smarthouse claims to have talked with insiders at Microsoft who have spilled the goods about a planned Blu-ray player for the Xbox 360. The rumor has it that Gates’ boys have already rustled up a Blu-ray player add-on prototype. If true, the defeat of HD DVD was expected and planned for some time by Microsoft. But I suppose you needn’t be gifted with soothsayer to have seen that coming.
The rumor also has the possibility of a built-in Blu-ray version of Xbox 360 being pondered by the company.
However, insiders at Microsoft were clear that it’s Microsoft’s position that high-def 1080P movies will be a downloaded commodity in the near future, not a shiny silver disc no matter what the format.
