Grand Theft Auto IV Out Like Gangbusters

It’s no surprise that GTA IV is the current top seller for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. But sales of the game have blown away expectations. Take-Two claims to have already sold 6 million units at $500 million dollars.

The hype machine for GTA IV just keeps on coming. The game’s publishers are now trumpeting record sales that have exceeded even the lofty expectation we were hearing last week. Estimates put total sales at $400 million for the first week but that figure has been blown away by the reality.

Reviews for the game have been outstanding. This isn’t just a video game, it’s a movie you play. Characters are deep and dialogue well thought out. Even the typical GTA controversy is generally muted, any game critic will tell you that the seriously depraved acts you may have heard being performed in-game are voluntary and not part of the story.

The worst criticisms of the game come from owners of Sony’s PlayStation 3 who have reported multi-player crashing issues. A few fans have gone so far as to count the pixels and have come to the conclusion that it’s running at 640P on PS3. Still nice but not the 1080P PlayStation 3 owners were looking for.

Still, they’re all rather small nits to pick considering the massive production that went into this game. Let’s hope it’s a sign of things to come.
