China DVD Piracy, the Business Solution
It’s no secret that piracy and fake products out of China is a real problem for large companies with a brand to sell. The country that makes most of the world’s stuff can also make clever replicas of all that stuff. What are businesses doing about it?
I wrote this piece for Audioholics.com this week. Clint, editor-in-chief of Audioholics, suggested DVD piracy might make a good story. I did some research and boy there was a lot more to piracy and fakes in China than DVDs. There’s a whole black market of intellectual property theft.
I also learned that many believe intellectual property theft to be a cornerstone of a developing economy. Only time will tell if that’s the case in China.
The scale of pirated DVDs is so much larger in China than anything we can conceive in North America. It’s so bad that it’s difficult to find legitimate copies of DVD movies to buy, even if you had the extra money to spend.
A few movie studios aren’t sitting back and relying on indifferent Chinese law enforcement for a solution. In lieu of any legal recourse Twentieth Century Fox, Warner Bros. and Paramount are taking matters into their own hands and combating piracy with practical business solutions.

The Bluray pre-release is cool too. I could be tempted to spend a little more to get a movie earlier. But not too much more. :)
