Apple claims 5 million iPhone victims

iPhoneApple is expected to announce almost five million iPhone victims so far. Oh, the humanity! If the sales figures are correct that's half of Apple's 10 million unit sales goal for all of 2007 and 2008.

According to 9to5mac.com Apple will announce the sales benchmark at this year's Macworld Expo.

That's a lot of sales for a so-called Smartphone that will self destruct if its owner should conduct a simple act that owners of any other Smartphone take for granted. Installing a third party programs on your iPhone will get you punished by Apple's firmware updates that will break your new toy.

Mac users are a loyal bunch. What's a constitutionally guaranteed right to private property to get in the way of a way-cool Apple product?

Unlocking your cell phone is a protected right under the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) that Apple would deny its customers even to the extent of purposely destroying the product with a firmware update.

But I hear the Apple fans. Constitutional rights are so 90s. Yeah like...1790s and iPhone automatically orients itself between landscape or portrait mode as you rotate it!

i guess you guys never read the press release regarding the opening of the software market for the iphone AFTER the SDK is finalized. colour me shocked and amazed that the literacy level around here is on par with a sewer. it's the EXACT same thing apple did with OS X. they don't want people making software that will break after the libraries are finalized. if you want software to work properly, you'd likely appreciate that. but, given your obvious slander of the mac platform, i'm hardly surprised.

iPhone is great, during my ownership, but me personally can't justify owning a $500 phone

Especially when Apple keeps releasing new firmware to break the unlock (see the upcoming 1.1.3 FW)

On the other hand, I wish I own Apple stocks to capture this addiction of Apple. Now it's $200 USD a share, and just wait until they release the sales numbers...

Apple is one of the best companies at marketing their products. Apple has one of the most loyal fan base, and the success of the iPod has lead to the success of the iPhone. This is an excellent critique, harsh in the language, but excellent none the less. It is quite refreshing reading articles like this. I always believe in educated consumers, $500 for a phone on a 2 year contract. Yes, I would call them victims.

Uh oh, the Maccies are all riles up again. Steve Jobs is more popular than Jesus OR the Beatles, and speaking ill of him or anything he farts upon is likely to get you Jihaded all to heck and back. So what if everything you said is 100% accurate... Maccies don't care about trivial things like that! So, I hope you've got some powerful UV lamps, 'cause you're gonna have an army of black sweatered vampires beating down your door any minute now.

I appreciate all the comments

I don't meant to seem so anti-mac or iPhone, it is a slick gadget. But that's really all it is, nothing that revolutionary. The part that really gets me is Apple attacking its customer base with detrimental firmware updates to purposely punish people for trying to unlock the cell phones.

Nick doesn't realize this but yes indeed, the US constitution guarantees you're allowed to unlock your iPhone. The DMCA had some additions in 2006 that made it legal to unlock any cell phone. Apple wants to break yours if you try it.

This is so slanted against iPhone it isn't even funny. Nick is right, it's not good journalism if you're slanting a story for your own opinion, it isn't even right!

And the auto-orientation is really cool btw:P

You have a constitutional right to private property, don't you?

Nick writes:

This is lousy journalism. You put up so many strawmen I don't even know where to start. By the way, you don't have a constitutionally protected right to install 3rd party software on your iPhone. That is borderline retarded.

Ha ha... Mac owners are a funny bunch. They say they love "ease of use" and "functionality" of the devices that they buy. Yet as soon as someone points out a serious flaw or (more commonly) a ridiculous anti-competitive proprietary-loving software system they get all defensive, "Its a quality control thing" they say, "the product is great out of the box" blah blah blah. If that were the case, if macs were so great, why the pitiful worldwide market share. And the negitive comments posted here, with absolutely no counter arguments to the article, prove my point. Oh well what do you expect for a bunch of artsy fartsy dipshits. PS: Nick, his ability to hack a phone my not be protected, but his right to say whatever he wants is, no matter how much you love your Mac.
