GTA IVIt’s the next step in the evolution of videogame-music and a unique new method of distribution. You don’t play along to your favorite songs using mock-up instruments in GTA IV, but music is an integral part of the experience. Rockstar Games has even included an in-game song identification and buy-now system.

While racing through Liberty City in that freshly stolen set of wheels you may hear a song you particularly like. Just pull out your in-game cell phone - dial ZIT-555-0100 and that song is tagged.

Tagged songs can be purchased from the Grand Theft Auto Social Club, a free online social network that lets you keep up with all things Rockstar. Your tagged songs can be purchased from the Social Club in a 256KB format for .99 cents each (or less). A nice touch is that all your purchased songs through GTA IV are absolutely DRM-free! You wouldn’t catch Nico screwing around with any DRM - why should you?

The music collection on GTA IV is relevant enough to leave the most jaded musical-hipster’s jaw hanging. No less than 16 radio stations sonically adorn your auto theft experiences. The game’s designers purposely went after non-pop tunes far from the mainstream stuff you’ll play along to in games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

From current to classics GTA IV includes a collection indie and alt with only a handful that’ll be familiar to the masses. DJs are voiced by the likes of Iggy Pop and Juliet Lewis spin a collection of 214 songs. That’s the biggest song library of any videogame.

Rockstar went so far as to hire a private dick to track down the surviving estate of Sean Delaney (after his death in 2003) for the rights to use the cult classic Walk the Night by the Skatt Bros. The game’s designers insisted this song be used and weren’t going to let it pass.

GTA IV is not just an amazing game. It’s new a way to be introduced to music and a clever distribution method. It’s an approach you can bet your Uzi you’ll see more of in the near future.
