iTunes 7.6 movie rental hack

iTunesiTunes 7.6 is now available, so you can download movies and get unlimited viewing time - until Apple fixes iTunes of course.

All the downloadable movie rental services do it - CinemaNow, Movielink, Xbox Live Video Store and now iTunes. It's the 24-hour viewing time limit. If you rent a movie from one of these services and download it to your hard drive, you have 30 days to begin viewing. Once you start viewing the movie, you can watch it as many times as you wish within a 24-hour period.

This time-limit thing is annoying! Well, it's been confirmed from a number of sources that for now at least, iTunes 7.6 will let you extend the viewing time simply by altering the time on your computer system's clock.

The rumor started at the Unofficial Apple Weblog where it was tested and verified, and then at Gizmodo where Matt Buchanan further tested iTunes time/date issues on Windows XP.

Here's how it works:

  • 1. Download the movie of your choice.
  • 2. Close iTunes
  • 3. Set Windows clock back a year
  • 4. Run iTunes and watch with beaucoup time remaining on your rental

Yes, it's that easy. Now go out there and exploit iTunes while you can. Now that the tacky headband has fallen off the Naruto, it'll be quickly fixed by Apple.
