eSata could clean up home theater system

eSATAeSATAIt could be responsible for finally cleaning up that rat’s nest behind your home theater system. A new Serial ATA standard will send/receive data and power up peripherals.

The Serial ATA Standards Organization just approved the specification for a new form of Serial ATA. The new Power Over eSATA standard will use eSATA to carry power as well data to your external devices.

There’s no telling how widely used this new format will be, I’m sure HDMI has nothing to worry about in the near future.

SATA is used in computers now to send and receive data across mother boards and to your hard drives. The new eSATA will likely find itself powering hard drives and RAID arrays.

But many home theaters equipped with Digital Video Recorders use SATA for external hard drive connections.

It’d be nice if one cable could bring audio, video and power to another device. It would help clean up that pile of black spaghetti you’ve got lurking under and behind that home theater setup.

You shouldn’t hold your breath waiting for it to replace HDMI because eSATA lacks the high definition content protection required of high definition devices. But it’ll be a nice bonus to finally see external storage on your DVR.
